Gail Damerow, one of the best known chicken-raising experts, has written multiple books on chickens. In her preface to “Storey’s Guide to Raising Chickens,” she makes some great points.
Chickens, she says, have been around for very long time. Over thousands of years, humans have bred chickens for different purposes. Throughout the ages, however, their needs have remained the same: Food, protection, and procreation.
What has changed is that the domestication of chickens have shifted the responsibility for providing for these needs from chickens themselves to humans.
People today have different reasons for wanting to have chickens (eggs, meat, cool pets and companionship), and live in different types of places (rural vs. urban). These factors impact the types of chickens we choose and the way we can raise them. For example, in rural areas, you can more easily raise roosters without having to worry about disturbing neighbors. In urban areas, you often have to design ways to raise chickens in more cramped spaces.
“All of this diversity among chickens and humans gives rise to an incredible diversity in our purposes for keeping chickens, how many we keep, the breeds we choose, and the methods by which we shelter and maintain them,” Ms. Damerow writes. “For this reason, no one can tell you the one right way to raise chickens, or offer you an established blueprint for keeping your own flock. The best anyone can do is explain the needs of fowl, offer possibilities for fulfilling those needs, and let you pick and choose the options that best fit your particular situation.”
